Beowulf is an episodic character on Once Upon a Time.

Before the Curse

Beowulf 613
Beowulf springs his trap for the Dark One. ("Ill-Boding Patterns")

During the Ogre Wars, Beowulf makes a name for himself as a hero, even possessing a sword forged by the Blue Fairy's light magic which is meant to ensure the victory of anyone who wields it into battle. This doesn't stop a multitude of his men from being slaughtered by ogres, though, and nor does it prevent the need for Rumplestiltskin to step in and kill all of the ogres with his newly acquired magical powers. While Rumple is being hailed as a hero, a jealous Beowulf announces to the village that the only reason he was able to step up to battle is because he turned himself into the Dark One, which makes the people start to fear him slightly. Beowulf builds on this by posing as the Grendel, kidnapping and murdering a few villagers with the intent of framing it on Rumple. He manages to steal the Dark One's dagger from Baelfire, Rumple's son, and plans on slaying the Dark One with it, and then he'll be hailed as a hero once more. However, Bae manages to steal it back and, knowing that Beowulf will indeed find a way to ruin their lives should he be allowed to live, he orders that his papa kill him. Rumple is then compelled by the dagger's magic to snap Beowulf's neck, setting him down a dangerous path of darkness. ("Ill-Boding Patterns")
